Aso is on a roll...

Wow, after last weeks remarks about Yasukuni and the Emperor, we know have him spewing out remarks about how wonderful Japan's colonization of Taiwan was.

The minister, Taro Aso, said in a speech on Saturday that Taiwan's present high educational standards resulted from Japanese colonial policies. China, which ceded Taiwan after losing a war to Japan in 1895 and considers the island a renegade province, condemned the comments on Sunday.

Mr. Aso said that "thanks to the significant improvement in educational standards and literacy" during Japan's colonial rule, "Taiwan is now a country with a very high education level and keeps up with the current era."

"This is something I was told by an important figure in Taiwan and all the elderly people knew about it," he said, according to Kyodo News. "That was a time when I felt that, as expected, our predecessors did a good thing."

My knowledge of the colonization of Taiwan is not what it should be so I'll refrain from commenting on that. I'm just shocked at his total lack of thought and intelligence when it comes to doing his job. This guy is the foreign minister, you would think he would be a bit more circumspect. Instead, he seems to be going out of his way to anger his neighbors. I guess he feels he needs to score points with the right wingers in his party.

It is definitely time for a new crew to lead Japan's government.

It seems like the people of Japan agree if maybe not for the same reasons.

A poll by the Nihon Keizai Shimbun published Monday showed that the support rating for the Cabinet of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi dropped to 45 percent, a decline of 14 percentage points from the previous survey in December.

The disapproval rating rose 9 points to 43 percent in the survey conducted from Thursday to Sunday by the business daily.

Please, please let's get some folks who understand foreign relations!
